About Studio Channel Art Fair

Public art producers Letting Space set up studio for two days of the Fair in The Cloud on Auckland’s waterfront, interviewing everyone from artists and art dealers to collectors, curators to baristas.

Through short, lively 10 minute interviews Studio Channel Art Fair aims to create a picture of the richness of the visual arts industry today. The studio will be hosted by art curators, commentators and broadcasters Sophie Jerram and Mark Amery.

“We want to consider the business of art and art as a business; one that ebbs and flows as much as any other industry in New Zealand,” says Mark Amery of Letting Space.

“The people we will be interviewing are society change-makers, helping transform how we see ourselves and the way we do things. We want to celebrate that and provide some insights into the process of presenting and exchanging work in the art market.”

Studio Channel Art Fair is an experiment in the way the public programming that accompanies art exhibitions and events usually operates. Rather than longer-form public presentations, the project responds to the shorter, networking series of interchanges that occur on the floor of the Art Fair, aiming to provide an open space for discussion. Space will be provided for the public to share their points of view.

“The project aims to create a public commons for talk amongst the hullaballoo of this major event. A space for critical reflection amongst the marketing of artists and galleries perhaps, yet it also recognises that the art market is as much driven by a passion and love for creative ideas as it is wheeling and dealing.”
