Sat 12 March: 2-6pm, Flowers & Foliage DepotBring in whatever you are willing to cut, trim or prune for us from your garden. Anything that you appreciate, we will –blooms, foliage, cut flowers, shrubs or trees.

6-9pm, WHITE NIGHT Event – Video screening

Sun 13 March: 4pm, Public Talk: Dr Rachel Carley on ceramics, still life and the floral. Plus Afternoon tea.

Wed 16 March: 6.30pm, Public Talk: Anna Miles on the invented and imaginary world of flowers on textiles.

Shopfront Events Programme Announced

The Suburban Floral Association's Shopfront is an alternative gardening project that will evolve and change regularly in form over the 12 days of its duration. There will be a series of object installations staged throughout but these will be joined by a series of events: video screenings, public talks, a Friday night cuttings takeaway, a flowers and foliage deposit day, and a floristry workshop. This is a Letting Space project in association with the Auckland Arts Festival 2011.

Every day something different will be happening at the Suburban Floral Association’s Shopfront. On this blog we'll be posting new entries on seperate events as more information becomes available. 

Shopfront Week Two events

Wed 16 March:  2-8pm  |  6.30pm, Public Talk: Anna Miles

Anna will speak about her interest in the invented and imaginary world of flowers on textiles.

Thu 17 March:  2-8pm, Video screening 

Fri 18 March:  2-8pm  |  6-8pm, Floral Arranging Workshop: Priscilla Hunt & Lynette Gumm

Please bring found and foraged flowers, weeds and plant material from gardens, or even the side of the road. Lynette and Priscilla will show us how to make a bouquet from whatever we collectively bring. You will be able to take home the arrangement at the end of the evening. Vases will be supplied, but each participant will need to bring their own secateurs and/or sharp scissors.

Over the summer the Suburban Floral Association have been shooting ‘drive-by’ photographs and film of flowering shrubs, trees and plants. These will be projected onto the window space at the noted times over the project’s duration. 

Fri 11 March:  5-8pm, Friday night takeaways

The Suburban Floral Association have also been striking cuttings from flowering shrubs encountered on their suburban outings. Anyone who visits Shopfront on this evening will be invited to take away a cutting for their own garden from another’s – be it hydrangea, hibiscus, philadelphus, viburnum or buddleia. 

Sat 12 March:  2-6pm, Flowers & Foliage Depot  |  6-9pm, WHITE NIGHT Event – Video screening 

Help bring something of the suburbs to the city! We want to create an installation using cut flowers & foliage from suburban front gardens. Please bring in whatever you are willing to cut, trim or prune for us from your garden. Anything that you appreciate, we will – any sort of blooms, foliage, cut flowers, shrubs or trees – any manageable lengths or heights will be useful (we have plenty of buckets and vases to put them in). Come along anytime from 2pm.

Found and Foraged Flower Arranging

Flower Arranging Workshop: Priscilla Hunt & Lynette Gumm

Friday 18 March: 6-8pm

Station Square, Newmarket Railway Station

The Suburban Floral Association invite you to a special workshop as part of their Letting Space project Shopfront in Station Square, Newmarket.

Please bring found and foraged flowers, weeds and plant material from gardens, or even the side of the road. Lynette and Priscilla will show us how to make a bouquet and/or a container arrangement from whatever we collectively bring. You will be able to take home the arrangement at the end of the evening. Vases and low containers will be supplied for the workshop, but each participant will need to bring their own secateurs and/or sharp scissors. If you want to take home your arrangement in one of your own low containers or a particular vase, bring that with you too.

Given Newmarket Station is on Shopfront's doorstep, Letting Space and the Association are encouraging the public to take the train to Station Square for Shopfront events. Go to www.maxx.co.nz for train times.

Help bring the suburbs to the city

Flowers and Foliage Depot

Saturday 12 March: 2-6pm

Station Square, Newmarket Railway Station

Come bring your flowers and foliage!

On the afternoon of Saturday 12th March the Suburban Floral Association are asking you to bring in flowers, foliage and 'cut tree' from your garden to Station Square in Newmarket to contribute to the Shopfront installation (made from the plants of suburban front gardens).

"Please bring whatever you are willing to cut, trim or prune from your garden. Anything that you appreciate, we will – any sort of blooms, foliage, cut flowers, shrubs or trees – any manageable lengths or heights will be useful (we have plenty of buckets and vases to put them in)."

Come along anytime from 2pm to 6pm with your plant material. You're also invited to stick around afterwards for Suburban Floral Association video screenings 6-9pm as part of the Auckland Festival's White Night programme.

Friday Night Takeaways

Friday Night Takeaways 

 Fri 11 March:  5-8pm

Aucklanders are invited to visit Station Square in Newmarket (cnr Remuera Road and Broadway) on the evening of Friday 11th March to get a takeaway of a different kind - a cutting for their garden or pots from the Suburban Floral Association's collection. The invented and imaginary world of flowers on textiles

Public Talk: Anna Miles

Station Square, Newmarket Railway Station, Cnr Remuera Road and Broadway

As part of their Letting Space project Shopfront in Station Square, Newmarket the Suburban Floral Association are pleased to present a talk by Anna Miles. Anna will speak about her interest in the invented and imaginary world of flowers on textiles at 6.30pm on Wednesday 16th March. 

Anna established her own gallery in 2003 (www.annamilesgallery.com). She teaches part time in the School of Art & Design at AUT. A number of exhibitions she has curated reflect her interest in the decorative arts including Bespoke: The Pervasiveness of the Handmade (Objectspace, 2006) and A Lace Life: The Alwynne Crowsen Collection (Objectspace, 2008).
